Artist’s statement
It starts as one thing and ends up as another.
As a process-oriented artist I never know where the path will take me. It’s the unknown that I find exhilarating and the knowledge that my curiosity is the best guide. It’s through the abstract and the fluid that I try to convey the thoughts and feelings and I find this organic process liberating.
Mix media process demands an obsession. It requires using many tools, layering various materials while accommodating their characteristics and requirements but also trying to push past their limitations to tell a story. My collage work relies heavily on repurposed materials in order to reconfigure, recover and reclaim the meaning. What better way to describe our increasingly complicated world and create a moment of reflection?
Artist’s bio
Olga Adler’s interdisciplinary schooling and professional experience paired with her lifelong interest in travel, social sciences and design converge and come as an asset to explore today’s complicated world both as a human and an artist. She is fascinated by the global interconnectedness as it translates into culture, and by the influence of social change on art first and eventually on design and lifestyle in a broader sense. She is a visual storyteller and calls herself an assembler of memories and dreams.
Before turning her full focus onto art, as an interior designer and art consultant, Adler told other people’s personal stories for more than 20 years. And even earlier, in her first career as a publicist and image strategist, she told stories for brands, products and celebrities. As an artist, the only story she tells is that of her own, showing the world as she sees it.
Adler’s Essence series is an exploration of convergence of pattern and color arranged to create visual sensation of movement and hypnotic-like effect through symmetry and repetition. It is also her first venture into merging the analog with the digital.
Her collage (Dreaming series) and abstract mixed media work (Other Worlds series) rely heavily on repurposed materials and focus mostly on everyday impressions creating a dialogue between form and memory. They often reflect complex social context and cross cultural references but ultimately they also are composed around color, pattern and texture of the everyday, the subtle repetitions she notices around her and the changes she sees in the world.
